COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY WITH DR INGRID McGUFFOG

CONVERSATIONS THAT ALLOW HEALING AND TRUE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

‘I believe that a different therapy must be constructed for each patient because each has a unique story’. – Irvin D. Yalom

The idea of going to therapy is often daunting. I remember my first therapy session and it was scary to go to a complete stranger and tell them what was going on in my life. It was at a really difficult time for me and the thought of getting vulnerable felt overwhelming.

My therapist was caring and compassionate and we had a conversation in which I felt safe and at ease. Very quickly I felt relief, I wasn’t judged, I felt truly heard.

This experience is what I offer. I see therapy as a very special kind of conversation and a place where personal development and healing can begin.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT IN A THERAPY SESSION?

In these 50-minute individual sessions, I will help you navigate the hurting, untangle your uncertainty or confusion, and sort through your emotions.

This one-on-one time is an intimate exploration, gently finding our way through your feelings and helping you to a place of expansive growth.

I work with you to gain clarity around your internal experience. From a place of non-judgement, you will start to understand the root causes of your most difficult feelings and emotions.

Deep self-knowledge leads to self-acceptance and self-compassion, and this is the light that extinguishes the shame which drives our struggle with life and self.

FINDING THE ANSWERS WITHIN IS THE BEGINNING OF HEALING

For those interested in the ‘technical stuff’: my practice is built on a foundation of experiential approaches.

I am first and foremost a person-centered counsellor from the humanistic tradition of Carl Rogers. I am engaging in further specialist trauma training and am informed by the research evidence about the neurobiology of the brain, attachment theory and I utilise interventions drawn from a range of approaches – tailored to each client’s needs.

I believe every person knows what they need and have the answers within, so I won’t tell you what I think you ‘should’ do or give advice or try to fix you.

My role is to walk alongside you and to help you to find your personal truth, and during this process you will:

  • gain self-awareness,
  • increase your ability to work with your emotions,
  • know your own value,
  • make meaning from your life experiences, and
  • tune in to your wise inner voice.
